I finally got my own person computer...a bit old but it will do. It had windows 98, but I wanted to install FreeBSD (www.freebsd.org). I reformated the computer to get rid of windows 98 fully. When I instaleld FreeBSD, I went downstairs to get some coke, and when I came back up I saw my little sisters hitting the keyboard. of course this messed up the whole installation thing, so I turned the computer off, and restarted it. It started booting from floppy, but then it went back into it's "i'm not reformatted so I can't install" error thing.

well...you didn't need to read that whole thing...question time

is there a way to reformat your computer from BIOS?

I have something like half an OS, so I can't do anythign with it, but it's still there.

lol...

someone asked me what the interface looks like, I don't know yet. I can't get windows x to work, so I don't have any graphical interface.

Yup, instead of "Create disk from image" (the ISO) he burned the raw ISO do disk... Can't do **** like that! LOL

Don't worry, I've done it too.

well...you guys better not laugh.

my mistake was that I copied the ISO image incorrectly. I just got Nero, and copied the ISO image correctly and now it works. thanks for all your help.

He's talking about windows because "win setup.exe" is a windows command, hence the "win".

I'm not trying to install windows. I'm using a ms dos disk for working and installing stuff. I got the bootable floopies, and i think that was the right path because when i try switching to d: drive it doesn't work either. i think i'll try a bit more, and if it doesn't work i'll have seguti come help. i'll bring anymore questions here. thanks!

Yeah, stop trying to install Windows!

FreeBSD is on a CD correct? Try booting from the CD.

The bad command or filename is from the fact that you're trying to run Windows from the floppy. I'll guarandamntee you that Windows is not installed on that floppy. And given that you said you blew it from the hard drive already attemtpting to run Windows off the floppy or hard drive simply won't work.

I'll agree with Impact.
Awhile back I thought my harddrive was fragged. After a lot of trouble, I finally went out and bought a new one. But when I installed it, I got the same error. Then I pushed the IDE cable in a bit more, so it actually went in, and boom, it works.
Then, about a month later, I'm thinking, it was the same error.

So, I find the old 20, reset the jumpers to slave, and plug it in, properly...

Now I have two hardrives. I don't know how the connection would have got loose, but it did. So check yours.

Yeah, I know where you was going. I was assuming that he has a single hard drive already set to primary master. I got to admit, you got a good idea.

Andrid, if you get your system up running with freeBSD, do me a favor and tell me how the interface look.

Thanks

i decided to return to freebsd. seguti (computer geek friend) told me that it has better performance then linux, and this is an old comp so i'm striving for every little boost i can get.

Andrid, even though you said its a software problem, you need too make sure that physical connection is absolute. Yes its time to get your hands dirty.

Like Lister said, you must check the power cables, and IDE cables just to be sure(hey noob, make sure the the PC is turned off). Automatically the bios Should be able to detect the hard drive. I'm thinking something might had came lose.

To make sure you're hitting the right button to see the bios, keep tapping the Del button at start-up. Now from the bios, look for something like a Utility or Setup tabs. Under those you should be able too see if the Primary master drive (the C: drive, hard drive)is on or active.

I doubt it if its a jumper if you already had Windows 98 on it. good luck man. Tell us for any changes

If the hard drive is detected, it should say so either on the bootup posting, or in the BIOS. Just look for an ATA Hard Disc Controller

this is a computer that used to have windows 98 working on it, so i know it isn't that. How can you tell if the hard drive is detected? sorry about the n00bish questions. I can't put a comp together, i can only do the software stuff.

Nobody said you were stupid.

With RedHat you don't need a "driver" for the hard drive. You would need drivers for the IDE/ATA controller but it's included (unless you've got some really obscure system.

If the system doesn't detect the hard drive, then either the BIOS is wrong, the drive is unplugged, unpowered or the drive is just plain bad.
