i'm gonna be building a new computer. some pieces from price watch...look at da stats :)

EIDE 120GB 5400RPM 2M Buffer hard drive

athlon 64 3000+ motherboard combo

512 mb pc4200 ram

ati raedon 9600 256mb ddr

i have some questions:

does the athlon being 64 bit make it incompatible with the ram?

would it really add a lot for the 64 bit one, instead of let's say a [2.8 ghz 800 Pentium 4 - Intel 845E chipset Audio DDR RAM 4xPCI 1xCNR Full Size ATX 1xAGP4X.]?

would i need to buy bran new I/O devices? (i have ones from a really old pentium 2 computer)?

i have 1 gig of pc100 sdram in the other computer. would we be able to use it, or should we sell it?

is there any way to make an exact copy of the hard drive? I have lots of music files and i don't want to start *getting them from the disks again*....yea gettign them from the disks. and also all the computer and game settings and the registy and and and and...

also any ideas would be nice, because my dad is putting this into my hands.

already did it...and overclocked a bit with ATI tool....working like a charm even in benchmarking.

and btw it works!!!

now i don't need to get up at all....external cd drive near my hand.... usb extensioner currently in use by my usb mouse, but i can unhook that and use my normal mouse that is still hooked up... and best thing is that i get over 20k in aqua mark, which means i will be able to play hl2 and doom3 easily.

well yesterday i spent my whole time from 9 to 12 building it, and then from 12-2 trying to fix it, and then i find a good site with a nice flow chart and learn that my mother board is faulty....OY VEY!....thank G-d for neweggs return policy though... i have it RMAed, i've already ordered a new MoBo (one they use in alienware computers:)) and will get it later this week. the bad part though is that this hard drive has Serial ata, and my harddrive is still ata for my older one....w/e though...too late now.

o yea....9800np can be flashed to 9800pro....go to google and do a search for it and read a bit....it's pretty crazy.

you shouldn't have a problem with having 2 graphics cards. It should default to using the one that is in the AGP slot once you stick one in the AGP slot. If you get lucky, you may be able to use both graphics cards to have dual (or maybe even quad!) monitors. Of course, you'd need the extra monitors for this but you'll find the extra desktop space to be of great value when you are doing many things at once.

I have a 40GB drive on my laptop and it's half full at the moment. I used up 20GB of space with the OS, 4 video games, and a small handful of media files (probably less than 4GB).

On my desktop, I have a 60Gb drive and I constantly have to clean it out because I'm always running out of room. I keep a lot of cd images on that computer.

The big issue with the 40GB hard drive is that you will be paying $55 for 40Gb of space when it costs $68 for 60GB,$63 for 80GB, and $85 for 120GB. It's only $30 more to triple your hard drive space --and that's with newegg prices. It can be even cheaper if you look for deals.

EDIT: also, the biggest bottleneck of your computer is your hard drive. When you are sitting in front of your computer waiting for a program to open and wishing you had a faster system, it is your hard drive that is taking forever. With a larger hard drive, the drive would naturally not be as full. When a hard drive gets closer to being full, its performance drops dramatically. Additionally, getting one of the "special edition" hard drives with 8MB of cache also drastically improvess the performance of your hard drive. Personally, I'd go for no less than an 80GB hard drive wi th 8MB of cache. Those sell for $72 at newegg. The drive on sale at officemax right now also has 8MB of cache and is 120GB in size.

1.well here goes my i'm not changing it thing. into the hard drive i'll look, but i doubt any change. two questions...ite ends up having two graphics cards, so will it use them both or just one of them? might it pose me problems?

2.i'm the only one using this computer. on this computer, there is a 90gig hd, of which just over 30 gigs is being used, for the whole family, with lots of simpsons episodes (i'd say about 20 hours). so i think that 40g just for me is enough.

3. i'll look.

Are you sure it's today? People on TW were talking about that last week, how they went to Office Max, and found them already out of drives...

It is slightly old news, but I believe it was posted less than a week ago on fatwallet. When it was posted on fatwallet, it was mentioned that the deals started on sunday. since today is sunday, i figured it was going to start today.

EDIT: never mind. It wentn from sunday, the 21st to saturday the 31st. I'm exactly a week behind.

EDIT2: Office Max now has a 120GB western digital special edition hard drive for $50 after rebates.

2. 40GB is pretty low. You very well may run out of room rather quickly and wish you got a larger drive. It just so happens that, starting TODAY, OfficeMax is having a sale on 80GB western digital special edition hard drives. They're $70 with a $50 mail in rebate so it turns out being $20.

Have considered in getting a Barebones kit? I know this a good way to take some of the guess work out in puttin your system together.

1. pcchips is not known as being a high quality brand. It ranks right around ECS.

2. 40GB is pretty low. You very well may run out of room rather quickly and wish you got a larger drive. It just so happens that, starting TODAY, OfficeMax is having a sale on 80GB western digital special edition hard drives. They're $70 with a $50 mail in rebate so it turns out being $20.

3. Never heard of a sapphire motherboard. They are known for having good video cards though. The thing that would worry me about the sapphire motherboard is the fact that it comes with onboard radeon 9200 graphics. You generally pay extra for semi-decent onboard graphics. It's also a mini-atx board, but that probably doesn't mean very much. Personally, I'd stick with abit, asus, epox, gigabyte, intel, msi, shuttle, or soyo. Abit and intel have the best p4 boards I believe.
