After my step-dad was screwing around on my computer, trying to bootleg the satelite, I came back to find that somewhere along the way he picked up a virus or something.
Now I don't know a whole lot about this stuff, but I know enough to know I don't want a reformat. Part of the reason for that is because due to the virus (I assume at least) whenever I try to burn a CD, I get the blue screen of death.
Either way, can anybody help me with this, or point me somewhere where I can find someone who can?

Problems:
-Whenever I load the computer, a program called "winservices" runs in the background. From what I can tell, it prevents Zonealarm and Norton from running.
-Whenever I get it with the old ctrl-alt-del, it shuts down, but if I try to turn on Norton, "winservices" loads instead.
-For some reason, my homepage for Internet explorer was changed to "Hirosh.tk" or some other such jazz. It happens to be the website of some hacker.

Anyways, other things are wrong, most having to do with programs refusing to load. Please help me out here. If you want more info, ask here, cause hotmail won't load anymore...lol.

Kudos to you Sapere. I am sure Scharfy or whoever would give you respect points for that.

Thanks everyone who offered help.
I finally just reformatted. So far, no major problems.

Another thing though, does anybody know of any scripts that basically do the same as PJ's kill pop-up, but without all of the other scripts that come with the PJ's all in one? I tried running the game after I had it reinstalled and patched, but before I put on PJs. It ran like a dream! How did I ever play without it like that? (with PJs I mean). The only problem was that I couldn't tell whe the fight was over, becasue I never got the message that I killed anyone...

Anyway, I'm back off to rebuild my computer. Thanks again.

I suggest you reformat your hard drive trying to get to the ROOT problem will not solve it, it produces other dll files and will quickly act, also if you can get this http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_downl.htm its a added virus protection free i run it with my norton 2003 and works great and updates daily on definitions, and set your firewall to scan for viruses. GOOD LUCK!

A quick search on Google for "winservices trojan" finds all kinda info, simple stuff actually, removing virus's. This one probally loads in the registry from the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run key. Once removed from the registry you'll need to find the .dll that loads it, usually found in the winnt\system32 dir.
Do some homework on this and you'll figgure it out.

somewhere on the internet is a web-based anti virus site.

My dad was talking to tech support and they mentioned it once.

It will scan and clean your drives for free, i think.

Slayer_Allen Posted - 01/17/2003 : 10:36:31
Because it DOES affect D2, Wolfenstein, Neverwinter, and esay cd creator. For now I have switched to fireburner, to solve that problem. And in the past week, I have gotten to the blue screen maybe 20-25 times. Everything runs crappy. I am going to do a format anyway, and not bother with the 15 or so Gigs of crap on my hard drive right now. None of which works at the moment either. I just didn't list it above becasue it seemed unnecessary.

The only reason I am using Norton is because my mom bought it for her computer. It is a 133 Mhz, which no longer even has access to the internet, so it doesn't really need an anti-virus.

fully, if i had any anti-virus software, i'd help, hell i'd even mail you a cd, but alas, i fear no virus. ignorance is bliss....

also...if it hasn't effected tribes, why would you even care?? if tribes runs i dont care if this box of silicon slag spits jibberish at me.

someone hook this guy up with some shareware *wink wink*

Slayer_Allen Posted - 01/16/2003 : 17:39:36
I'll check. I already have Norton 2000, but it refuses to let me update until I decide to pay them some more money.

be careful before you reformat. Make a rescue disc (even to an infected state). Some viruses go dormant and hide in the registry even during a full format.

Try www.symantec.com and see if they have any fixes/patches for download.

3dSapere Posted - 01/15/2003 : 23:04:14
Just format your harddrive and save yourself some trouble.

Will this actually do anything about getting rid of the virus? Or is it just a survey?

Go there, follow the quick 2-3 steps and scan.

Ugh. Still have virus.

Found out it doesn't affect tribes though, so I am set.

Funny thing. I set my homepage to MSN.com, then today, it was changed to another, different hacker site. This one is more of a community site called www.neworder.box.sk. It is in English now. I got Norton to run, but it is ancient and didn't detect the virus.

Anyway, problem is not yet dire. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Edit: Sorry, perhaps this is not a hacker site. It is just a site frequented by hackers. <ahem> Thanks again.

Well, I found a second problem. THe guy doesn't list any contact information on his site. I am sure there is a way to find it out, but wait - If I knew that I would know everything and would not be having this problem...

Thanks Mallak, not all bad advice, lol. I know text is not how you transfer a virus, but then again, it was my step-dad who was doind stuff. He knows how to turn on the computer, but that is where it ends. Either way, I will see about emailing this guy. Only problem may be that his website is in broken English. Thanks anyway.
