It sounds to me like you purchased one of those 12 year old wives from the Philippines or something.

but I could be wrong.

So what model you get? Is it a nice short barrel "home defender" or are you planning on shooting deer or ducks with it?

It is a Mossberg Persuader 500. It is a 12-gauge pump-action (duh) shotgun with a 18.5 inch barrel. It is supposed to hold 6 rounds (5 plus 1 in the pipe), but I can only seem to get 3 in (2 plus 1 in the pipe).

Oh, and it is for home defense. I have no intention of killing animals. I mean, I don't have a freezer big enough to store a deer anyway.

Are you trying to load 3" magnums?

Is the dummy plug still in the tube?

3" = yes

The manual says that will only take away one round from the total so 4 in the stock and 1 in the barrel.

Dummy plug, wtf?

Remove the shells including the one in the barrel!

Remove the end cap of the magazine tube. This will release the barrel. Then remove the magzine tube - this is spring loaded so be careful.

There may be a small plastic or aluminum tube (about the size of a shell at the head end of the spring assembly).

Mossberg used to ship with a dummy plug in the tube to shorten the amount of rounds held to comply with federal laws.

OOh... another note. When I had my 500 and removed the plug, I needed to buy another spring to replace the original as it was too short. It was like a $15 kit at the gun shop.

Good info. I don't seem to have the power (more likely the nerve to apply too much pressure)to remove the magazine. I think I'll wait on this then.

Perhaps I could use a ported barrel. My shoulder is all bruised up. I wish I were skinny enough to have a plate of bone there as opposed to the muscle that the kick is grinding the butt into.

Do ported barrels make any noticable difference?

Oh thats nice lister. Convince Him to bring a shotgun into work. Didn't you have some "issues" with Him bringing a gun into work after you owned him in the last fragfest?

Not really a major difference unless you're shooting slugs. DO NOT SHOOT SLUGS with the stock barrel, I believe it's a full choke.. you'll split the barrel like a cartoon effect. (Been there, done that)

If you're seating in the pocket right it shouldn't be hurting you.

There are pads that fit right over the butt the will lessen the impact a bit.

What did you shoot?

Slugs. They won't let you shoot buckshot in the range.
Any barrel suggestions btw?

Oh, if Mouse reads this, does that range you told me about allow buckshot to be fired?

Looks like that one has a pretty good barrel now. You might get one withbetter rifling or something. I'll poke around some.

I'm assuming that you're basing that on the barrel not exploding on me after shooting 30 slugs through it? Actually, more like 27, 3 didn't fire and I didn't think it was wise to reload them.

eew, I hope you left the slugs in the chamber for several minutes each just to be sure they aren't going to fire as you're holding it in your fingers staring at it wondering why it didn't fire.

Bullets that don't do their job right away scare me.

Actually, it ejected and rolled away from me.

It was funny, my first 15 rounds were perfect. I bought an addition 15 because shooting is just so cool that I had to continue. Anyway, the second 15 was a different brand and all 3 that didn't fire came from those. I just remember the white box. I guess I'll say no white box next time.

Also, I think the guy that was at the ammo counter was very antiNewbie. He was about as rude and mocking as can be. Whatever...

Funny how people can still be rude to you even when you are holding a shotgun in one hand and a box of slugs in the other.

I would think that's the one time people are nice to you no matter what.
