winME sucks (more ways than one) and im in the market for winXP
specifically, im looking for xp pro, full version (not upgrade, wont have os to upgrade from.) i dunno about this oem thing that some of the versions have..whazzat?
problem is a cant find a good/accurate price for xp. im seeing anywhere from $130 to $300, dont recall xp pro ever being more than 200...
anyone know wheres i can find a good price on xp, or what a price range would be? im thinking $150 +/- 30

hate to bump a older thread, but got another question
while im strongly in favor of wiping the hard drive to do a clean install of xp, i do have that system restore disk that came with my compaq, and according to what little documentation i can find, it theroetically reformats the drive and restores the comp to factory settings (and reinstalls winME somewhere in the process i'd think)
for the sake of argument (and so i can explain it to my dad) whys ME suck so bad, whys xp so much better, and why should i go with a clean install of xp over this restore disk (which is probably junk anyways)?

do a clean install with the XP pro cd. If there's any software on the compaq restore cd that you want, try sticking the cd in AFTER you have the system clean and up and running and see if you might be able to install the software afterwards. Using the system restore cd basically fills your computer with extra junk you don't need.
winME sucks because it is the absolute worst version of windows ever created. To be more specific, winXP is better than winME because winME is built on win9x. WinXP is built on windows NT, the far more stable, far superior server version of windows.
So. . . you can use a more stable file system (NTFS over fat32), it crashes less, runs better, and is more compatible with todays hardware and software.
you want to do the fresh install instead of using the restore disk and upgrading to winXP because you will have all the junk that compaq has decided that you need and you will still have random bits of junk left over from winME. A clean, junk free computer is a faster computer.

Wow Krusty you are just full of XP info thats good to know. So my new computer AMD 3200 athlon 64 with a gig of ram running XP Pro keeps maxxing out my CPU when I run T2. I got the Blaster, the welch, and one other worm but I am sure I got rid of them.
I have been having UE's more constantly and when I get one I now have to restart my computer to get back the performance.
Any suggestions.

Remember the blue screen of death that would happen all the time in WinME? Often for no good reason at all? Now try and think through your history with XP. Has this ever happened to you? Think hard. I'll tell you, you really have to try and make it happen with XP. I've gotten it once or twice, but never while I was doing something normal on my computer and never for no reason.
Furthermore, WinXP is all around more user-friendly. Everything is automated. Want to unzip that file? In ME you had to go download WinZIP or RAR or PowerARC. XP has a built in function.
Want to network two computers? In ME it was a fluxoring hassle. In XP you just connect them and run the wizard. Voila.
XP > ME. No, XP >> ME.

I agree. XP totally owns ME with no competition. XP is way more easier to use and run programs with. and you have alot more user options and freedom than with ME. i hate the Blue Screen of Death it comes up all the time with ME. with XP i havent even gotten it once yet.
