Voltage restrictions in Canada prevent data from travelling over phone lines in excess of 48.8 kb/s. So that means that when Bell says you're getting 56k, you're actually not. But they charge you as if you are.
What a rip off

It's not a law so much as a regulation/safety procedure. And yes, we get cable, DSL (lose), t1-t3, OC 48, etc.
I play cable, but my neighbour has dialup, and I pity him

I have DSL and it is great! Oh wait, no it isn't. Actually, it sucks. Hard. But Bell has a new service, called 3mbps (wonder how fast that is...hmm...), for like $5 a month more than what I am paying now...
On another note, my friend lives in the boonies, and his 56k gets him 18k max. And does the phone company where you are charge by the speed of your modem? That is an odd situation.

Americans can only actually get 53.6kbps off a 56.6k modem. That's why once the 56k modems came out, they stopped getting any faster. But DSL is a completely different story than phone service. Really what it comes down to for any broadband service is the quality of the lines it uses...old crappy phone or cable lines handicap your speed, regardless of the servers the company has or how fast your computer is. That's why you should move into a new neighborhood like me where they put in a brand new cable line off the main one and you only have to share your connection with 5 other houses.

I'm right. Always. |

Mine is pretty ****ting new. And I live next door to the hub or whatever the place is called. Instead of waiting in the customer service phone line, I can hop over and bother them in the flesh.
