gainward is actually a pretty decent brand even though they also have some of the lowest priced cards. I bought a gainward geforce 3 (origional, no TI anything) hoping that my saving $30 on the video card would be a good risk and was quite happy. I have yet to hear anyone complain about a gainward card.
As for the FX series, the top of the line Geforce FX 5900 and the top of the line Radeon 9800 pro are approximately the same price and perform approximately the same.
I have not seen much on the 5600 in particular though.

For just gaming, it's a close call between Nvidia and ATI. But if you want more features, ATI is the way to go. If you go for a Geforce, just do some research to make sure that the card you're getting stays close to the ref designs put out by nvidia themselves. Most reviews can tell you, or try to find an article that just compares all the brands of a particular model.

I've read complaints that Tom's is a little biased nowadays. He tends to downplay the fact that nvidia keeps cheating on the benchmarks and posts the false scores from 3dmark in his reviews. But really you should take anything you read on the internet or elsewhere with a grain of salt.

toms hardware guide has definately been biased quite a bit in the past couple years. And I completely understand why he is biased too. He gets money for advertisements from hardware companies. At the moment I'm staring at an Asus ad on his front page.
Want to know about the latest hardware? I go to www.overclockers.com. It may not be reviewed on the front page, but I can guarantee the people in the forums have something to say about it.

Hey I didn't know overcloakers had a forum about Graphic cards. I just found out about the new drivers for the ATI Radeon pro series, it increased the performance of my 9700pro card by a good 20-30 percent. Thanks Krusty for info!
