What is the main difference between the hardware and operating system for a server as compared to a PC?

Basic rule of thumb, server boards are optimized for data throughput and 24/7 running at full loads.

It depends on who builds the board as to what they're definition is.

What's it going to be used for?

IMHO Stick with Intel & SuperMicro for the highest reliability.

The network connection. You could scrap an old Pentium II down to bare bones (operating system and game)and run a good server as long as you have the net connection for it.

You can test it by putting up a server and letting people connect.

I'm mainly just interested in learning what the difference is. Probably run tribes server, teamspeak and a website.

CPA is a P4 ~2GHz (Mouse?) running on an NxT1 (Paired T1s)...

Realistic - at least 256K up/down and a PIII @ 850MHz. With that you could run T2, GR, CoD and a few more games from the server standpoint and be fine.

I assume you meant a network file server in your previous post.

/me wishes they (the industry) would standardize the lingo... game service does not equal server.

You can probably run a 16 person server on a dsl or cable connection.

Maybe Krusty but DSL and Cable both have problems since the up isnt as fast as the down. 16 people on most of either type of connection would probably be laggy. At least in my experience.

just gotta figure out how much bandwidth each person takes and then look at the upload bandwidth for your internet service. I think most of those 16 person servers in T2 are run off of dsl or cable, but I could be mistaken. The most I've ever had on a server I ran was like 4.

if your on dsl/cable 4 is pretty good. But after 6 you start to notice lag, all because of the sucky up load

Yeah, I've never been in a Cable/DSL server that hosted more than 4 people without starting to lag.

When Winkie was trying to run a server from his place, I think we managed to get to like 6 before it was too laggy.

hardware--servers can usually hold a ****load of memory (even up to 20gig). but that is only comps that are built to be servers. you can run any computer as a normal server, but you need an internet connection with a upload at least as fast if not faster than the download. that why cable doesn't work. they give you lots of download, but since you don't use the upload that much, they skimp you out on that one.

there's a test for bandwith somewhere.....i think it may even be in this forum....

Some DSL providers offer "buisness" class DSL or SDSL that has the same up and down speeds and static IP's(in my area they offer 1.5Mps and higher)but, it costs something like $200 a month!!!

Do not meddle in the affairs of pimps, for they are subtle and quick to anger.

i dont know if i am crossing the line but i am curious how much does it cost to keep CPA running every month ?

i know it that Miami Vehciles Server is having financial problems and it costs $129 a month to run it and keep it maintained along with TS, the website and other expenseses..

i just want a good estimate because i am thinking about running my own major server...just wondering.

woudl be really appreciated if it was responded.

That is probably the price they are paying some server hosting company for the server, and doesn't reflect the actual costs involved.

On the other hand, these server hosting companies can pay massive dollars for a connection that is usable for hosting such servers, and then charge all their clients a fraction of that cost. So either way that number could be off. However, most server hosting companies will charge $200-$300 a month for a public server as large as CPA or HV.

Lastly, CPA, being hosted by Integral, probably doesn't have to deal with costs in the same way as normal servers, seeing as how they are the ISP in the first place.
